Duality of terrestrial subterranean fauna

چکیده
INTRODUCTION There are two time frames in considering terrestrial subterranean ecology, the classical period of 1832−1980 dealing with caves, and the modern period after the 1980s when a wide range of other subterranean habitats were also considered. After Schmidt (1832) published the first scientific description of an invertebrate well adapted for living in hypogean habitats, the beetle Leptodirus hochenwartii from the cave Postojnska jama in Slovenia, interest in studying subterranean biology and ecology increased enormously. Evidence of eyelessness, depigmentation, relatively long appendages and other convergent characteristics of subterranean animals launched the need for their ecological and morphological classification (Schiödte, 1849, 1851; Schiner, 1854; Racovitza, 1907). Since then, many modifications and refinements have been

Subterranean Fauna of Christmas Island, Indian Ocean
The subterranean environment of Christmas Island is diverse and includes freshwater, marine, anchialine, and terrestrial habitats. The cave fauna comprises swiftlets, and a diverse assemblage of invertebrates, both terrestrial and aquatic, which includes a number of rare and endemic species of high conservation significance. At least twelve species are probably restricted to subterranean habita...
متن کاملPatterns of Cave Biodiversity and Endemism in the Appalachians and Interior Plateau of Tennessee, USA
Using species distribution data, we developed a georeferenced database of troglobionts (cave-obligate species) in Tennessee to examine spatial patterns of species richness and endemism, including >2000 records for 200 described species. Forty aquatic troglobionts (stygobionts) and 160 terrestrial troglobionts are known from caves in Tennessee, the latter having the greatest diversity of any sta...
متن کاملAustromesocypris bluffensis sp. n. (Crustacea, Ostracoda, Cypridoidea, Scottiinae) from subterranean aquatic habitats in Tasmania, with a key to world species of the subfamily
Austromesocypris bluffensissp. n. is described and we report another species, Austromesocypris sp., both collected from subterranean aquatic habitats in Tasmania. This discovery adds a major taxonomic group to the already diverse invertebrate cave fauna of Tasmania, and is of interest because, globally, obligate subterranean aquatic species (stygobites) are poorly represented within the family ...
متن کاملThe significance of the subterranean fauna in biogeographical reconstruction: examples from Cape Range peninsula, Western Australia
Cape Range peninsula contains a diverse troglobite (obligatory cave inhabitants) fauna, the only rich troglobite community known in Western Australia and in the semi-arid tropics. At least thirtyeight species of troglobite (or stygobiont) in this sparsely sampled area place it amongst the worlds faunistically diverse karst areas. The characteristics of the region and its subterranean fauna are ...
متن کاملمعرفی بخشی از فون سختبالپوشان (Coleoptera) مزارع برنج شمال ایران
Beetles (Coleoptera) are the largest order of insects, which exist in all agroecosystems and natural ecosystems. Since rice fields include both aquatic and subterranean ecosystems, diverse fauna of beetles are active in rice fields of the world. In regard to the importance of these insects in chain foods of biosphere, fauna of some coleopteran families was surveyed in north rice fields of Iran ...
